Napoleon Bonaparte Hunewill came to California in 1861 and started logging jeffrey pine in Buckeye Canyon to supply the gold boom town of Bodie. He turned to cattle around 1880 in what was known as Big Meadow, now Bridgeport Valley. He built a house and barn in 1881. Both are still standing and being used.

In 1931 beef prices fell to a few pennies per pound almost assuring cattle ranches would be bankrupt. Lenore Hunewill, Stan Hunewill's wife, had the idea to open the ranch to paying guests resulting in great success.

To this day, the ranch welcomes guests to experience ranch life in late May through the November cattle drive to the second ranch in Smith Valley.
