My Background
I was born in Glendale, California in August of 1949 at the Glendale Sanitarium and Hospital. My mother was an award winning artist that had studied home economics at Purdue University and art at the Chicago Art Institute. My father was also a graduate of Purdue earning a degree in engineering. He became a general contractor; building dams, freeways, highways, harbors and also mining. I was one of eight children raised in Glendale.
When I was 6 years old 2 of my paintings won blue ribbons at the Los Angeles County Fair, and from then on I wanted to become an artist. My first brush with photography was when I was 8 years old and I received a hand-me-down Kodak Brownie camera.
The problem with the Brownie and an 8 year old was the shutter button was difficult for small hands to push, making each black and white shot blurry. My real fascination for photography didn't come about until I was in college and took a class. Part of my interest was sparked by the magic of the darkroom. Most photos I took changed from what I had seen and wanted to capture to a fraction of the beauty my eye had seen. Gigantic mountains became small. Sometimes the light changed from what I had seen, etc. I could change that in the darkroom by burning and dodging, using filters, etc. That was with black and white. Later color film and a 35 mm camera opened up more creative possibilities.
I am the jack of all trades and the master of jack. I have had, what I would call, over 25 careers. Some would call me unfocused, others use the term a renaissance man. I prefer the latter. Each career aided in my interest in photography, though.
In 1997 I built a website for a gallery I was the director in. I needed photos to show the artwork we were selling. The owner decided a little later that he wanted to try Ebay, and so I needed photos of the framed works we wanted to sell. We were one of the first internet art galleries. Later I went to work for a boat dealer handling the web, advertising, IT, and doing sales. We needed photos of the boats.
In the meantime, I became fascinated with landscapes, animals and birds.
Throughout my education I was taking classes in art: commercial, fine art and history. This is where my "eye" comes from.
